Gordon League 8 Clevedon 34
9th March 2002
| Back to 1st XV fixtures
Clevedon made the ideal start, playing up the slope and into the wind, with a well worked try by Tom O'Rourke after good work in the line out. Clevedon won lots of good ball but seemed to over complicate things in the backs with a series of final passes being poor. The home side kicked a penalty on a rare occasion in Clevedon territory. A fine break by Tim Brooks saw Christian Bushell go over for a try, which was quickly followed with a try by the evergreen Adie Freeman. Without John Pearce and James Shopland, replacements James Bale and Neil West contributed immensely to the packs domination of the set pieces. The second half started like the first with Owen Biggins going over early on with Lowis converting. At times the game became rather physical but Clevedon stood their ground and let their rugby win the day. A slick handling move saw Adie Freeman score his second try in the corner. Mike Sweet replaced Nick Hill with twenty minutes to go and Matt Groves saved Neil West's old bones from further punishment by doing the same. Gordon League did not give up and deservedly scored an excellent try, but Clevedon had the final say with a fine individual try by speedy Chris Cates, which Lowis converted. Skipper Jeff Durant had an outstanding game in the line out, with Tim brooks giving a battling, bruising display in midfield. Man of the match was Owen Biggins, but man of steel was James Bale for his injury strewn game in the second row. Match day
