 Clevedon 47  Old Richians 6

  Back to 1st XV fixtures

Clevedon were nearly back to full strength but started slowly, and soon fell behind to a penalty. Good line out possession led to a great individual try by Tim Brookes under the posts, which was converted by Mike Lowis. Clevedon dominated the rest of the half but poor handling and lack of teamwork proved their undoing. Instead of playing controlled rugby, Clevedon rushed things and played like a team of individuals.

Stern talking by coach Brian Hanlon at half time seemed to do the trick although Old Richians scored first with their second penalty. Tom Thie replied for Clevedon and then for the rest of the game, Clevedon played well-controlled supportive rugby. The lineouts and scrums became a forgone conclusion, especially the scrums. A superb handling movement saw Antony Fox score a try which Thie converted. This was quickly followed by a Thie penalty. Good hands put Christian Bushell away for another great try which again Thie converted. Clevedon were now completely in the ascendancy. Bushell scored his second try again after good handling. James Shopland, the games outstanding forward, scored two tries and young Tom Thie scored a try which he converted to crown a good second half performance.
